On the day the first coronavirus vaccinations were administered in Florida, the state recorded another 8,452 infections bringing the total number of cases since March to 1,134,383.

The weekly average number of cases is about 9,800 per day, according to data from the Florida Department of Health. The average is close to the levels seen in early July, right before Florida saw its peak surge.

On Monday, the state also announced 138 deaths from the virus. The death toll has reached 20,271 people who have died from COVID-19. The death average increased to about 106 people announced dead per day.

Hospitalizations: Across Florida, about 4,900 people are in the hospital with a primary diagnosis of coronavirus, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. In Tampa Bay, just under 970 people are hospitalized, or about 20 percent of statewide hospital admissions.

About 23 percent of Florida’s hospital beds and 22 percent of its intensive care unit beds were available as of Monday afternoon. About 22 percent of Tampa Bay’s hospital beds and 18 percent of ICU beds were open.

The number of cases that resulted in a hospitalization increased by 142 admissions Monday.

Positivity: Florida’s average weekly positivity rate is about 9 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University. It is one of 47 states that don’t meet the World Health Organization recommended rate of 5 percent or below.

If the positivity rate is too high, it can indicate there isn’t enough widespread testing to capture all the mild and asymptomatic cases in a community.

With just under 115,000 tests processed Sunday, Florida had a daily positivity of 8.34 percent, according to the health department.

Local numbers: Tampa Bay added 1,570 coronavirus cases and 29 deaths Monday.

Hillsborough recorded 13 deaths, Pasco recorded seven, Pinellas had four, Citrus had three and Manatee had two. Hillsborough County now has more than 1,000 recorded deaths from the virus, and the most in the region. Hernando and Polk counties did not report any additional deaths Monday.

Hernando County leads the area with the highest average weekly positivity rate at about 10 percent. Hillsborough and Polk counties follow at 9 percent, then Citrus and Manatee at 8 percent and Pinellas at 7 percent.

As of the latest count, Hillsborough has 66,041 cases and 1,006 deaths; Pinellas has 38,118 cases and 960 deaths; Polk has 31,383 cases and 725 deaths; Manatee has 19,020 cases and 403 deaths; Pasco has 17,975 cases and 329 deaths; Hernando has 6,021 cases and 245 deaths; and Citrus has 5,570 cases and 220 deaths.
