Milwaukee, Wis.- Villanova men's lacrosse was able to hold off the Marquette Golden Eagles to pick up their first win of the season. The Wildcats defeated the Golden Eagles 16-14 and were led offensively by Matt Campbell's career high seven points and another six from Keegan Khan.
Villanova jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead; Khan set up Corey McManus for the opening goal then Campbell netted an unassisted one at 10:04. Connor McClelland scored the first for Marquette at the 9:00 minute mark to make it 2-1. It stayed this score at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw a total of 14 goals, seven by each team. Marquette scored three of the first four goals to go up 4-3, this would be their only lead of the game. Patrick Daly scored his first goal of the season at the start of the quarter. The Wildcats went on a 4-0 run midway through, Campbell netted the first at 10:48, then Daly scored his second, Sam Parkinson got in on the scoring action at the 8:49 mark, and Eric Overbay set up Campbell to complete the run and put Villanova up 7-4. Overbay would score one of his own and the Golden Eagles netted four to tie it at eight with minutes to go before halftime. Just as the clock was winding down Khan dished it to Campbell to put Villanova up 9-8 at halftime.
Villanova and Marquette were even in scoring again the third. Campbell opened up the second half with a goal on a pass from Overbay. The Golden Eagles then netted one of their own but the Wildcats answered back. Campbell this time set up Khan and the Austin Fraser scored his first collegiate goal at the 7:50 mark. Devon Cowan scored for Marquette, he finished with a team high four goals and two assists, and then Khan netted his third of the day to put Villanova up 13-10. Marquette scored two before the end of the quarter to make it 13-12 Villanova.
Colin Crowley scored his first of the season on a pass from Khan to start off the fourth, but the Golden Eagles scored two to tie it up at the 9:37 mark. Villanova's offense was able to score and pull away with the lead on a goal my McManus on a pass from Campbell. The Wildcats scored an insurance goal at the 5:05 mark when Khan was able to score an unassisted goal making the final 16-14.
Will Vitton got the win in goal and finished with seven save. Justin Coppola went 19-for-32 at faceoff and had a team high nine ground balls.
Khan is now 10th all-time in Villanova history in assists with 59 in his career. He is also one career point away from entering the top-10 in that category as well.
The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, March 7th when they travel to Rhode Island to take on the Providence Friars. First face-off is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
