A La Porte man faces multiple charges including auto theft and reckless driving after leading police on a chase in Michigan City March, Michigan City Police said.
According to an MCPD press release, Officer Zachery Wells was conducting a traffic stop on a motorist in the 300 block of East 11th Street at about 1 a.m. when another car sped past. Wells followed the speeding vehicle and tried to stop it, but the motorist continued to flee. A chase ensued through the northwest side of Michigan City with additional MCPD and La Porte County Sheriff’s officers joining in.
The driver eventually stopped in the 1600 block of West 10th Street, then fled on foot. He tripped over a fence and was then arrested.
The fleeing driver was identified as Joshua Murray, 30, of La Porte.
Officers discovered that the vehicle Murray was operating had been reported stolen. They also found evidence of drug use in the car, which was ultimately impounded so it could be returned to its owner.
Murray was charged with Auto Theft (Level 6 Felony), Resisting Law Enforcement (Level 6 Felony), Possession of a Syringe (Level 6 Felony), Resisting Law Enforcement (A-Misdemeanor), and Reckless Driving (C Misdemeanor) and issued multiple citations. Officers also learned that Murray had the following active arrest warrants through the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department: Escape (Level 6 Felony), Possession of a Syringe (Level 6 Felony), Theft (Level 6 Felony), False Identity Statement (A-Misdemeanor) and Possession of Marijuana (B-Misdemeanor). He was not issued a bond.
