Baseball Opens Malone Series with Doubleheader Split - ohiodominicanpanthers.com

AKRON, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican baseball team split a doubleheader against Malone at Canal Park Friday afternoon.

ODU conceded the final three runs during Game One in a 3-1 loss. The Panthers bounced back with a 10-7 triumph in Game Two, where they never trailed.

Ohio Dominican improves to 14-6 overall and 6-6 in Great Midwest competition this spring. Malone's doubleheader split has the Pioneers at 10-15 overall and 5-13 in the G-MAC.

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Junior Zac Wilson (Hamilton, Ohio) and sophomore Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) each posted three hits to lead the offense over the twin bill.
  • Wilson was the lone Panther with multiple hits in the first game, going 2-for-4.
  • Brill registered a pair of doubles in the second half of the doubleheader.
  • Freshman Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) drove in four runs on the day, including three in Game Two.
  • On the mound, freshman Scott Rouse (Hinckley, Ohio) tied a career high with eight strikeouts in the opener.
  • Prior to the start of Friday's doubleheader, Rouse was named National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America Midwest Region Pitcher of the Week.
  • Freshman Michael Lesiecki (Uhrichsville, Ohio) picked up his second win of the season, while classmate Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) logged his fifth save of the spring.

GAME ONE SUMMARY

  • The two teams combined for seven hits over the first three innings, but only one run was scored.
  • Sophomore Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) led off the top of the third frame with a triple to right field and scored on the next at-bat by Marshall.
  • Malone answered in the bottom half of the fourth, tying the game at 1-1.
  • ODU was held to just two hits from the fifth inning on and a pair of runs by the Pioneers in the seventh secured Malone's 3-1 win.
  • Rouse started, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing three runs.
  • Redshirt freshman Myles Martinez (Columbus, Ohio) tossed 1.2 innings in relief, allowing only two hits.

GAME TWO SUMMARY

  • Ohio Dominican scored in every inning but the fourth in Game Two, reaching double digits for the eighth time this spring.
  • The Black & Gold improved to 7-1 when scoring 10-plus runs in 2021.
  • Hunt highlighted a three-run second inning for ODU, as his single up the middle scored a pair of Panthers.
  • A two-out base hit from Marshall in the third gave the Panthers a 6-3 lead after three-complete.
  • After the Pioneers had cut the Panther lead to two runs, 9-7, graduate seniors Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) and Roger Danison (Carroll, Ohio) made consecutive diving catches in the outfield to leave two Malone runners stranded.
  • Back-to-back doubles from Marshall and junior Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) in the top of the seventh gave the Panthers another insurance run and a 10-7 lead.
  • Bolander pitched the final six outs, not allowing a hit to earn his conference-leading fifth save.

UP NEXT

  • The Panthers and Pioneers will conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 10.
  • First pitch is now set for noon.
