BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn.—A 20-year-old Black man died after police shot him during a traffic stop in a suburb of Minneapolis on Sunday, sparking protests, looting and clashes with police into Monday morning, according to state and city officials.
The killing comes amid tight security for the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of murdering George Floyd. Mr. Floyd’s death led to peaceful marches as well as arson, looting and violence in Minneapolis and around the country. Since the trial began, there have been some protests in Minneapolis calling for justice in the case; they have involved a few hundred people but all have been peaceful.
The man who died was later identified as Daunte Wright by state and city officials.
Police in Brooklyn Center, which borders Minneapolis, said the shooting occurred as they were trying to take a driver with an outstanding warrant into custody following a traffic stop just before 2 p.m. Sunday.
An officer shot the man after he re-entered his vehicle, police said in a statement
