SAUK CENTRE, Minn. - Saint John's opened its 2020-21 golf season with a 292-297 dual win over Concordia on Saturday, April 10, at Lynx National G.C. (par 72).
Senior Esten Stensrud (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) and sophomore Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) led SJU with an even-par 72 each to tie for third out of the 25 golfers. Senior Preston Kopel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Foley) and freshman Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) followed with a 74 (+2) each and freshman Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minn.) rounded out the Johnnies' five with a 76 (+4). Loxtercamp eagled No. 8 (par 5, 540 yards) and Stensrud eagled No. 12 (par 5, 500 yards).
SJU's Blue and White teams also carded a 297 (+9) to tie with the Cobbers. Freshman Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) led the Blue team with an even-par 72, while freshman Max Thelen (Minneapolis, Minn./Totino-Grace) tied with CC's Mason Opheim for medalist honors - and led all 16 Johnnies - with a one-under par 71 for the White squad. Thelen bogeyed his first two holes but tallied three birdies and 13 pars the rest of the way.
Junior Isaac Burgess (Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska Area) carded a Johnnie-best five birdies and finished with a 1-over par 73 for SJU White.
The Johnnies travel to compete against No. 22 Gustavus Adolphus and No. 20 St. Thomas in a 10 a.m. triangular on Sunday, April 11, at Emerald Greens G.C. in Hastings.
