Tyler Technologies, the largest provider of integrated software and tech services to local, state, and federal governments, has acquired ReadySub, a cloud-based platform that assists school districts with tracking absences, filling substitute teacher assignments, and automating essential payroll processes.

Since ReadySub serves approximately 1,000 school districts across the United States, the acquisition will enhance Tyler’s school portfolio and allow it to provide more comprehensive solutions to school district clients.

Tyler plans to add valuable integrations with its school administration products, giving clients a variety in workflow solutions, according to a statement. In fact, some school districts already have integrations between ReadySub’s technology and Tyler’s school administration products.

Along with ReadySub, Tyler also recently announced its acquisition of DataSpec, a market leader dedicated to providing better electronic management of veterans’ claims.

Both acquisitions come on the heels of Tyler’s announcement in February that it entered into a definitive agreement to acquire NIC, a leading digital government solutions and payments company based in Olathe, Kansas. The acquisition was called its largest one yet.

“Acquisitions remain a core component of Tyler’s growth strategy. Following an unusual year in 2020, we are returning to a more regular rhythm of investments that broaden our market reach and strengthen our competitive position. In particular, we are focused on technologies that make our solutions more comprehensive while helping our clients accelerate their move to the cloud,” Brian Miller, executive vice president & chief financial officer at Tyler, told Dallas Innovates via email.

A school scheduling solution

Founded by David Vail and Vince Zanella, ReadySub is based in Seattle, Washington, and currently has 10 full-time employees. Of the nearly 1,000 school districts across the United States that ReadySub serves, approximately 20 overlap with Tyler’s 2,000 school district clients.

By granting users with a simple way to manage absences and substitutes, districts are able to deal with unplanned staff absences with highly qualified substitute resources. ReadySub’s platform allows districts to retain a pool of qualified substitutes, automate the searching and filling of needed spots, and avoid a substitute teacher shortage.

Additionally, ReadySub can assist with districts’ payroll processes, thereby eliminating duplicate work and streamlining it.

“We are looking forward to joining the Tyler Technologies organization as we feel they share our vision for technology in K-12 space,” Michael Lucia, head of business development for ReadySub, said in a statement. “We are excited about seeing the positive impact we will make together for school districts, their staff, and their students.”

And districts aren’t the only ones who stand to benefit. By integrating the technology, substitutes can make their resumes known and available to districts in their area and choose to take assignments that are beneficial to their careers.

As part of the acquisition, ReadySub’s management and staff will become part of Tyler’s Schools organization and its current employees are expected to continue working remotely, according to a statement.

Together, Tyler Technologies and ReadySub plan to work to enhance the cloud-based platform, making it easy for both substitutes and district staff to access the tools they need from from any device, including smartphones and tablets.
