SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana baseball team defeated the Sioux Falls Cougars 7-1 in Wednesday's game one before falling 6-3 in game two of the twin bill. On the season, Augustana moves to 22-7 overall and 18-7 within the NSIC.

Game One
Senior lefty Koby Bishop got the start on the mound for the Vikings in game one and was his usual self: spectacular. The senior tossed six shutout innings in the seven-inning affair and struck out five while surrendering just two hits. The win moves Bishop to 5-1 on the year with a 2.34 ERA and 48 strikeouts.

Offensively, Augustana got things going right from the start. After sophomore outfielder Carter Howell walked to start the ballgame, junior infielder Jordan Barth launched a two-run homer down the left field line for the 2-0 lead. Later in the bottom of the first, the Vikings scored on a fielder's choice to push the score to 3-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, Barth came to the plate and produced the same result as his first at-bat: a free jog around the bases. This time, Barth hit the homer to left-center, his second of the day and his seventh of the season.

The Vikings scored their fifth run of the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior catcher Will Olson. Up 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Howell came to the plate after a single to center field from junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz. Howell then hit his seventh homer of the season to put the Vikings up 7-0.

The Cougars were able to scratch a run across in the top of the seventh to bring the final score to 7-1.

Overall, Barth finished with three hits in the game while Rosencranz and senior infielder Christian Kuzemka finished with two apiece. Howell, Olson, senior shortstop Sam Baier and senior outfielder Riley Johnson all finished with one.

Game Two
Sophomore righty Ryan Jares started for Augustana in game two and was dominant. Jares struck out 12 Cougars in seven innings of work while surrendering just three hits and one run. He continues to lead the Viking pitching staff in strikeouts, now with 56 on the season.

Sioux Falls pushed a run across in the top of the third inning for a 1-0 advantage, a score that would remain until the top of the eighth inning. In the aforementioned frame, the Cougars ballooned their advantage to 6-0 on three RBI walks and a two-RBI single.

The Vikings attempted to mount a comeback and scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning on a three-run double down the left field line off the bat of Kuzemka. In the top of the ninth, senior righty Parker Hanson kept Sioux Falls at bay with a scoreless inning of relief in which he struck out the side.

Augustana's bats, however, were held quiet in the bottom of the ninth and the Cougars secured the 6-3 victory.

At the plate, Kuzemka and freshman infielder Max Mosser, who entered as a pinch hitter late in the game, both tallied two hits. Howell, Johnson and senior infielder Darek Bornemeier all finished with one apiece.

Up Next
The Vikings are back on the road and face the Winona State Warriors twice on Saturday and once on Sunday. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1:30 p.m. while Sunday's contest is set for noon.
