COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican baseball team honored its 2021 senior class Saturday afternoon by earning a weekend series sweep of Great Midwest rival Lake Erie.
After winning both games on Friday, the Panthers won the opener Saturday, 3-1, before earning a 15-4 triumph in the series finale. Ohio Dominican improves to 27-9 overall and 19-9 in G-MAC play.
SENIOR DAY RECOGNITION
- The Panthers honored five seniors prior to play Saturday, including Roger Danison (Carroll, Ohio), Clay Davies (Massillon, Ohio), Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio), Danny Matic (Highland Heights, Ohio) and Devon Robb (Kingston, Canada).
- Danison and Komminsk combined for four hits Saturday, led by Danison's 2-for-3 performance in Game Two, where he also scored four times.
- The trio of Davies, Matic and Robb pitched all seven innings of the nightcap.
- Davies started, throwing 5.2 innings, allowing four runs and striking out three batters. Davies did not allow a run over his final 3.2 innings of work.
- Robb registered the final out of the sixth inning, while Matic struck out two in a clean final frame.
BOX SCORE NOTES
- Ohio Dominican collected 17 hits over the two games, with Danison and sophomore Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) each logging three to lead the way.
- The two also combined for half of the team's runs, scoring nine times over two games.
- Sophomore David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) saw his streak of consecutive games reaching base safely end at 27 in the opener. He did bounce back with a 2-for-4 effort in Game Two.
- Brill, Danison, Silva and freshman Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) all had multi-hit performances in the nightcap.
- Junior Brendan Hofacre (Chardon, Ohio) started the opener as he improved to 3-0 on the season. After Saturday's performance, ODU is now 8-0 when Hofacre gets the nod on the mound.
- Freshman Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) earned his sixth save of the season in Game One, moving him into sole possession of first place in the G-MAC statistical standings.
GAME ONE SUMMARY
- A fast-paced opener that had ODU and LEC play seven innings in just one hour and 39 minutes, saw Hofacre allow just one run on three hits.
- The junior was dealing early, facing just two batters over the minimum through three innings.
- The only run LEC could salvage off Hofacre came on a sac fly in the top of the sixth.
- Bolander then relieved the junior and retired all four batters he faced to lock down the save.
- The Panthers did all of their offensive damage early, as Danison stole third with two outs in the second and off the errant throw attempt by the Storm catcher, trekked the final 90 feet.
- Junior Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) roped a double down the right field line to give ODU a 2-0 lead in the third.
- Komminsk then followed with a RBI groundout to put the Panthers up 3-0 through three complete.
GAME TWO SUMMARY
- ODU trailed 4-0 after the top of the second, but scored 15 unanswered runs to win a shortened series finale.
- The Panthers had 13 hits, and were active on the base paths, stealing seven bags, led by Brill's three.
- The Black & Gold took the lead for good in the third, as Danison hit a two-run double to left and sophomore Derek Kutrubs (Brunswick, Ohio) scored on a wild pitch. ODU led 5-4.
- Ohio Dominican hit two home runs in the game, with both coming in the bottom of a six-run fourth.
- Staab belted a one-out solo shot to right, while junior Zac Wilson (Hamilton, Ohio) hit his third home run of the season to left center, scoring a total of three runs.
- Four additional Panther runners crossed home plate in the fifth, with Brill and Marshall each recording a run-scoring double.
- ODU's three senior pitchers combined for five strikeouts in the game and did not allow a run after the second inning.
UP NEXT
- Ohio Dominican has now concluded the regular season portion of its 2021 schedule.
- The Panthers, who have won six straight games and 11 of their past 12 outings, will now break until the G-MAC Tournament.
- The postseason event is set for Wednesday, May 12, through Saturday, May 15, at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.
