Penguins Tie Program Record for Home Wins, Split Doubleheader with Milwaukee - Youngstown State Athletics

The Youngstown State baseball team tied the program record of 18 home wins as it split a doubleheader with Milwaukee on Saturday at Eastwood Field.

The Penguins took game one 9-4 in seven innings before falling 14-12 in game two. With its victory in game one, YSU tied the single-season program record of 18 home wins that was set in 1977. Youngstown State is now 31-22 overall, 23-16 in Horizon League play and 18-4 at Eastwood Field while Milwaukee is 20-30 overall and 17-22 in league action.

With two triples on Saturday, the Penguins set a new school record with 26 on the season. The previous mark of 25 triples was set in 1997. This season marks just the third time in program history that the Penguins have hit at least 20 triples in a campaign.

Game 1 Recap

The Youngstown State baseball team used two four-run innings to pull away for a 9-4 victory over Milwaukee in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Eastwood Field.

The Penguins scored once in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead before the Panthers evened the score with a run in the top of the second. YSU then plated four runs in the third and four in the fifth to build a 9-1 advantage. Milwaukee scored three times in the top of the sixth to produce the final margin.

Eight different Penguins recorded a hit in the contest as YSU outhit Milwaukee 11-8. Dominick Bucko went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs while Jeff Wehler was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Nick Caruso went 2-for-3 with an RBI double while Lucas Nasonti recorded a two-run double. Blaze Glenn, Turner Grau, Padraig O'Shaughnessy and Steven D'Eusanio also drove in runs for the Penguins.

YSU starter Jon Snyder allowed one unearned run on three hits and struck out three batters while walking six over five innings to earn his sixth victory of the season. Conner Johnson was responsible for three runs on four hits over two thirds of an inning while Joel Hake tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first save of the season.

The Penguins grabbed an early lead with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Wehler reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Phillip Glasser and reached third on a failed pickoff attempt. Glenn then brought Wehler home with a sacrifice fly to left field to put YSU ahead 1-0.

The Panthers answered with one run of their own in the top of the second inning. Zach Nogalski hit a one-out single, advanced to second on an ensuing error and reached third on a wild pitch. Joe Vyskocil then brought Nogalski home with a sacrifice fly to center field to even the score at 1-1.

YSU regained a 5-1 lead with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning. Wehler hit a leadoff single and advanced to third on a single by Glasser. Bucko followed with a two-run double to left center field, and Grau delivered a one-out RBI double down the right field line. After Grau advanced to third on a wild pitch, Padraig O'Shaughnessy brought him home with an RBI single to right field.

The Penguins extended their advantage to 9-1 with four runs on four hits in the home half of the fifth inning. D'Eusanio delivered an RBI single, Caruso hit an RBI double and Nasonti came through with a two-run double.

Milwaukee cut YSU's lead to 9-4 with three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning. Mike Ferri was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Luke Seidel followed with an RBI single and Mitchell Buban was also hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Milwaukee starter Mike Edwards took the loss after surrendering seven runs, six of them earned, on eight hits over 4.2 innings. Jake Armstrong allowed two runs on three hits over 1.1 innings of relief.

Jack Cavanaugh, Nogalski and Vyskocil each had two hits to lead the Panthers offensively.

Game 2 Recap

A late comeback attempt came up short as the Youngstown State baseball team fell 14-12 to Milwaukee in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Eastwood Field.

After trailing 14-4, the Penguins scored the final eight runs of the game to give themselves an opportunity in the bottom of the ninth. YSU scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull within 14-9, and it scored three times in the ninth to get within two runs.

In the bottom of the ninth, Trey Law hit a one-out double and scored on a two-out RBI single by Glenn. After Grau and Andre Good drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, Braeden O'Shaughnessy singled to third base and an ensuring error allowed Glenn and Grau to score to pull the Penguins within 14-12. With the potential tying run at second base, Milwaukee closer AJ Blubaugh got pinch hitter Padraig O'Shaughnessy to strike out swinging to end the game.

Eight different Penguins registered a hit in the contest as YSU outhit Milwaukee 17-13. Glenn went 5-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Glasser was 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored.

YSU starter Nick Perez suffered his third loss of the season after allowing eight runs, five of them earned, on six hits over four innings. Matt Brosky allowed two runs on three hits over two innings while Nathan Ball was responsible for one run in one inning of work. Brandon Matthews surrendered three runs on three hits in the eighth inning while Andrew Russell retired the side in the order in the ninth.

The Panthers took an early edge with one run on the one hit in the top of the first inning. Seidel hit a leadoff single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

The Penguins evened the score at 1-1 with one run on two hits in the home half of the first inning. Glasser hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a walk by Bucko and scored on an RBI single from Glenn.

Milwaukee regained a 4-1 advantage with three runs on two hits and two errors in the top of the third inning. Ferri hit a leadoff double, Seidel reached on an error and Nick Winter walked to load the bases with nobody out. Mitchell Buban then reached on a fielder's choice, and an ensuring error allowed Ferri and Seidel to score. Winter then scored when Jack Kraus hit into a double play to give the Panthers a three-run lead.

Youngstown State shaved Milwaukee's lead to 4-2 with one run on two hits in the bottom of the third. Glasser was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a single by Bucko and reached third on a double steal. Glenn then delivered an RBI single to shortstop that plated Glasser.

The Panthers extended their lead to 8-2 with four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. Seidel hit a leadoff single, Winter reached with a bunt single and Buban was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kraus then delivered a two-run single to center field, and Nate DeYoung followed with an RBI single to left center. After Kraus advanced to third on a fly out, he was able to score on a wild pitch to give Milwaukee a six-run cushion.

Milwaukee added a pair of runs on two hits in the top of the sixth to push its lead to 10-2. Ferri hit a one-out double and Seidel followed with an RBI triple to right center. Winter then drove home Seidel with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Panthers scored their 11th run of the game in the top of the seventh when Kraus hit a solo home run to right center field.

The Penguins made it an 11-4 game with two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the seventh inning. Glasser led off the inning with a solo home run to right center. Bucko was hit by a pitch and came around to score on an error following an infield single by Glenn.

The Panthers tacked on three runs in the top of the eighth inning to increase their lead to 14-4. Winter hit a two-run single and Buban drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

YSU responded by scoring five runs on five hits and an error in the home half of the eighth to cut Milwaukee's lead to 14-9. Wehler hit a leadoff triple and scored on an RBI single by Glasser. Later in the inning, Grau and Good each drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Dylan Swarmer delivered a two-run double.

Milwaukee starter Jack Mahoney allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five batters over four innings in a no-decision. James Severson was awarded the victory after tossing two scoreless innings of relief. George Swedie allowed two runs in the seventh while Patrick Tomfohrde was responsible for five runs, only one of them earned, in the eighth. Blubaugh allowed three runs, two of which were earned, in the ninth.

Seidel went 4-for-5 with an RBI and five runs scored to lead the Panthers' offensive attack. Winter and Kraus each recorded two hits and three RBIs.

The Penguins and Panthers will conclude their four-game Horizon League series and close out the regular season on Sunday with a single game at noon. There will be a special Senior Day ceremony beginning at 11:30 to honor YSU's 2021 senior class. Live audio will be available at YSNLive.com.
