NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's baseball split a pair of extra-inning games with St. Olaf on Saturday, May 8, at Mark Almli Field.
SJU (27-9, 16-8 MIAC) took the opener in eight innings, 7-3, to extend its program-record win streak to 15 games, but it came to an end with a 3-2 loss in nine innings in the nightcap. The win was the first for St. Olaf (11-8, 4-7 MIAC) against the Johnnies, which batted 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and 2-for-17 with runners on base in the defeat, in Northfield since 2011. SJU finished at .176 (6-for-34) with runners on base and .143 (3-for-21) with runners in scoring position in the doubleheader.
Junior catcher Ethan Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) set a single-season, program record with his 13th home run of the season – a solo shot to start the second inning – in game one. He finished 3-for-8 on the day with two RBI and is now on a nine-game hit streak.
Game 1
SJU built a 3-0 lead with singles runs in the second, third and fourth innings before STO found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth (3-1). The Oles tied the game with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but SJU took advantage of an error and scored four runs on four hits in the top of the eighth. A pair of sophomore Eastview graduates, third baseman Zach Selchow (two RBI) and second baseman Owen Dauk (RBI) came through with run-scoring singles.
Senior Nick Penick (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) went the distance, allowing the three runs on six hits. He struck out six in the eight innings to improve to 6-0 on the year.
Selchow and freshman outfielder Rodney Erickson (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) collected three hits each, while Ethan and Soren Roe tallied two hits apiece and combined for three runs scored.
Game 2
The Johnnies gained a quick 2-0 lead thanks to a wild pitch and a balk in the first inning. The Oles chipped away with a run in the third and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.
A leadoff walk (Joey Glampe) served as the winning run off sophomore Alex Otto (Monticello, Minn.) in the bottom of the ninth. Glampe moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an error. Sam Lavin hit a weak groundball to senior first baseman Justin Langer (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View), but his toss to Otto attempting to cover first base was wide of the mark.
Otto took the loss, his first of the season (5-1 record), due to the unearned run. He allowed one hit and struck out two, with three walks, in 2.1 innings of relief.
Sophomore Casey Trapp (Blaine, Minn./Centennial) allowed two runs on 10 hits, all singles, and struck out seven in six innings for the no-decision.
Erickson led SJU's offense by going 5-for-9 from the leadoff spot, while Selchow batted 4-for-8.
Sophomore designated hitter Max Nyrop (Alameda, Calif.) saw his hit streak end at 14 games in the opener (0-for-5), but doubled in his first at-bat of game two.
The Johnnies host the Oles for Senior Day and the regular-season finale at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 9, at Becker Park.
