New Men's Basketball Coach Jase Coburn welcomes to his staff a coach who has three seasons working in the Viking program, Scott Sommer.
Sommer joined Portland State as the Director of Basketball Operations prior to the start of the 2018-19 season. He was named an assistant basketball coach prior to the 2020-21 season.
Coburn has kept Sommer on staff as Viking basketball enters a new era.
"During the transition, Scott really proved what a great recruiter he is. He was able to successfully recruit a group of talented student-athletes," said Coburn.
"Over the last two months, it has just been Scott and myself running the program. He has worked really hard and had to wear many hats for me and his role and duties have really increased. Scott stepped up when I needed him most. I am super excited to have him back, and I think he has an unbelievable future ahead of him in coaching."
Sommer previously worked as the director of basketball operations for Cal State Northridge men's basketball from 2016-18.
Prior to his time at CSUN, Sommer had been an assistant coach for one season at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, MS. That team enjoyed an outstanding 16-win campaign, capping it off with a Mississippi Association of Community & Junior Colleges South Division Championship.
Sommer completed a host of responsibilities at PRCC including handling recruitment, scouting and administration with the team. He also helped PRCC host an inaugural Thanksgiving Shootout, district all-star games and a variety of fundraising promotions.
Prior to his time with Pearl River, Sommer served as a recruiting analyst and publisher for Scout.com and he coordinated events and compiled recruitment information for West Coast Hoops.
Sommer has also handled administrative responsibilities at premier national basketball camps such as Hoop Group Elite and West Virginia Jam Fest while he has coached at camps including at the University of Oregon.
A native of San Diego, Sommer is a graduate of Xavier University with a degree in Sport Management (2011). An accomplished student, Sommer was a member of the Mortar Board Honor Society while attending Xavier.
